310711 Loughgall 1 Lisburn Distillery 6
The best to last it seems after a superb first-half hat-trick from an impressive Jordan Hughes sank Loughgall at Lakeview Park. Grant Malone responded for the home side in that half but it was a testing time for home keeper Marc Robinson in the second-half. The Whites added three more through David Larmour, Mark Cooling and Gary Liggett to round off a positive performance before the big kick-off next Saturday. 310711 – DST – our thanks and their events
We told you recently about the Distillery Supporters Trust and their new website.
Members have recently spent a number of nights promoting the club in various parts of Lisburn through leaflet drops – the leaflets provide information on the club including fixtures and pricing.
Our thanks to them on their efforts and hopefully we will be able to welcome more new supporters this season.
There are also two more ‘fundraisers’ being run by the DST. These are;
1) Away Games Golden Goal Competition
For the 2011/12 season, the Distillery Supporters' Trust have introduced a new Golden Goal competition for all Distillery's pre-split, AWAY games.
Entry to the competition costs £10, and will entitle the entrant to a number which will correspond to a minute in a match. The entrant will keep this number for the duration of the competition (17 games).
If this number corresponds with the first goal scored by either team, then the entrant will win £25. In the event of a scoreless draw, the prize pot for that game shall roll-over to the next away fixture played.
Numbers can be purchased from any DST Committee member.
2) Jason Manford Prize Draw
The DST have also released information on their next prize draw.
The prize includes:
If you are interested in purchasing tickets, then please speak to any of the DST Committee Members, or contact them, stating how many tickets you would like.
Tickets are £1 each, or a book of 6 can be bought for £5. The draw will take place on Saturday 05th November 2011.

Larne 1 Lisburn Distillery 3 (Saturday 23 July 2011)
A game of two halves as they say, but Larne took the lead when Niall McAllister lobbed Billy Brennan on seven minutes. That lead should have been doubled seven minutes later but Paul Maguire couldn’t convert a left wing cross. On 22 minutes Neal Gawley dived full length to send Aaron Traynor’s cross looping past the Larne keeper and in, before Larne missed another good chance two minutes later; Maguire failing to connect.
The visitors upped the tempo after the break, David Cushley’s free-kick going in off the wall on 51 minutes before Maguire was again close at Brennan’s goal. On 69 minutes Jordan Hughes saw his shot smash back off the post before another good move almost saw Cushley in for his second. The Whites missed further chances before Hughes deservedly ended the scoring given his second-half contribution after a good pass from Jordan Forsythe.
Lisburn Distillery – Brennan, Callaghan, Ferguson (Sharkey 46), Simpson (Robinson 46), Traynor (Black 62), Forsythe (Patton 46), McCullough, Gardiner, Cushley (Forsythe 76), Larmour (Kerr 46), Gawley (Hughes 62). 160711 – H&W Welders Match report
H&W Welders 1 Lisburn Distillery 2
Lisburn Distillery chalked up their first pre-season win thanks to first-half goals from Jordan Forsythe (31 mins) and Aaron Traynor (37 mins).
On eight minutes Welders’ keeper Michael Dougherty made a smart save to keep out a header before Whites’ keeper Billy Brennan was forced to make saves from Barry Bloomer, Ryan Harvey and Paul Muir.
Traynor forced Dougherty to save at his near post and from the resulting corner Forsythe scored another impressive goal with a rasping 25 yard effort into the corner of the net.
Six minutes later Traynor converted from close range after a good cross from Forsythe before Harvey almost pulled one back five minutes before the break; his shot though went wide.
Second-half Bloomer and the Welders went close again, the number 10 seeing a header crash back of the post (55 mins) and on 80 minutes the home side hit the post again – Brennan made a good save to deny Philip Carson and the number eleven saw a follow up effort bounce back of the woodwork.
With six minutes remaining Craig McMillen scored from the spot after he had been upended in a challenge with Philip Simpson and substitute keeper Blane Scott.
Lisburn Distillery - Brennan (Scott 82), S.Thompson (Robinson 69) , Sharkey (sub 82), Simpson, McShane (Morgan 73), Forsythe (Anderson 82), McCullough (Patton 46), A.Ferguson, Traynor (Stewart 69) Gawley (Cushley 58), Larmour (Hughes 58).

080511 George Wilson Cup Info/Preview Final game of the season then on Wednesday and its’ a Final as Lisburn Distillery Seconds take on Linfield Swifts in George Wilson Memorial Cup Final at Seaview on Wednesday night (11th May 2011). Admission charges are £5 Adults and £3 concessions – the game kicks-off at 7.45
pm. This is Lisburn Distillery Seconds first appearance in the George Wilson Cup Final since 1993/94 when they lost 2-0 to Ballyclare Comrades Reserves. It was the second losing George Wilson Cup Final in-a-row as they had also lost the 1992/93 Final to Bangor Reserves 3-0. The Wee Whites have won the trophy three times, the last time being in 1987/88 when they beat Carrick Rangers Reserves 3-0 with goals from Mark McCloskey (2) and Colin Hamilton.
They had previously won the trophy in 1981/82 when it was played in a League format and had to win their last game against Larne Olympic to pip Linfield Swifts --- they won 2-1 with goals from Colm McCrory and Wallace Rollins.
They won the trophy for the first time in 1956/57 when a goal from Denis Shiels sealed a 1-0 victory over Linfield Swifts and we hope that is a good omen for Stuart and the team.

The news tonight is that keeper Phil Matthews is retiring from Irish League football.
Lisburn Distillery boss Tommy Wright confirmed that the Carling Premiership match against Cliftonville will be Phil’s last game before he hangs up the gloves.
“It will be his last game of football on Saturday, Phil’s retiring after the game” said Tommy. “But he will come in one night a week and help out with coaching the other keepers. We obviously want to thank him for everything that he has done over the years at the club and we understand why he has made the decision he has made but I am delighted that he is still going to stay around the club.”
The thirty-seven year keeper who completes his testimonial season this year joined the Whites in the 2000-2001 season. Before that he played Bangor Larne, RUC and Glenavon. Following his arrival from Mourneview Park he made the number one jersey his own and won a number of player and supporters awards with a string of consistent performances. A supporters’ favourite, it was this year that he picked up his only senior medal following the Co-Operative Insurance Cup win on 02nd April.
He surpassed Billy Smyth’s goal-keeping record of 355 appearances and to date he has made 394 appearances. He is the only keeper in 130 years of Distillery history to have kept more than 100 clean sheets and ironically his retirement has been announced ten years to the day he scored his only goal for the club from the penalty spot on 28 April 2001.
We thank Phil for being a great servant to the club and the many memorable moments he has given us during those seasons.

310311 – The Final: almost there
We are almost there!
It’s the Co-Operative Insurance Cup Final at Mourneview Park on Saturday – kick-off 2.30 pm - and there is a lot of excitement and anticipation and no doubt a few nerves, on and off the park.
It will be a huge day for our club and our supporters and we are looking forward to it. We have almost (see post below) sold all the tickets that we have been able to get (some 600 odd). We have five fully booked buses travelling to the game and are considering a sixth.
A word of genuine thanks is due to Ged Irwin who has worked extremely hard in handling our ticket allocation and booking the buses. There will be face-painting and a party atmosphere at New Grosvenor from 11.30 am on Saturday with flags and balloons available plus a “Happy Hour” in the Social Club.
The team will wear a special Cup final kit and manager Tommy Wright and his backroom staff are looking forward to the kick-off.
Congratulations to Tommy and the team on reaching the final. It’s been a remarkable journey this season to have made the top six in the Premiership, played in the Setanta Cup and be in the Co-Operative Insurance Cup Final given last season.
But on Saturday we will be there, the tough fixture programme and sheer number of games since January will be forgotten and when the whistle blows it will be game on.

The Whites were disappointed to exit the Setanta Cup against Shamrock Rovers last night.

A special mention must go to Paul, John and the other members of the the the Tallaght Hoops Supporters' Club whose hospitality yesterday was superb – they met our supporters bus, provided food and refreshments and escorted us to the superb Tallaght Stadium venue.

110311 – Carling “An Evening of Legends” Night
It was another enjoyable “Legends” Night at the club last night with recollections, memories, views and wit from Kenny Hamilton (below right), Bertie McMinn (below left) and Billy Hamilton (centre).
Here are some snippets: Kenny spoke about the 62-63 Championship winning side, the Benfica game and how he hadn’t done badly at a club that according to the detractors at the time didn’t win much – he got 4 City Cup, 1 Championship, 1 Irish Cup, and 3 Ulster Cup medals plus 3 appearances for the Irish League XI. The weekly wage in Kenny’s day was £6 with a £2 win or £1 draw bonus thrown in.
Midfield maestro McMinn admitted there was no substitute for playing and that it was certainly easier than management before reflecting on the lack of players in the game nowadays who can beat 2 or 3 players on the run.
Big Billy, an armchair spectator these days, reflected on his enjoyable time at the club and had the audience laughing as he explained how some signings had come about and how some hadn’t.
Another good night with the inimitable Jackie Fullerton the host – our thanks again for the entertainment go to Carling.

230211 – Spike’s historic strike
Congratulations to Glenn Ferguson on becoming the second highest scorer of all time in Irish football.
His 50th minute goal (pictured below) against Ballinamallard United on Monday night saw him reach an astonishing 562 career goals and took him one ahead of former Linfield legend Joe Bambrick.
Former Belfast Celtic and Glenavon ace Jimmy Jones heads up the all-time scoring chart with an incredible 646 goals and it is unlikely to see any of the three master goal-scorer’s records being surpassed.
There was no doubt that Glenn was disappointed at the Whites’ cup exit on Monday night and he said that he would have traded that historic goal for a win but the result is past. More importantly , his goal and his record in Irish League football are history, a personal history, a living history, and he can look back with great pride on an immense contribution in local soccer.
Well done Glenn – a true Irish League Legend.

311010 – “Shave” our Spike (well, in December)
Lisburn Distillery player and coach Glenn Ferguson may have been talked out of hanging up his boots but ‘Spike’ is about to hang up his razor for the next 30 days to support ‘Movember’: a month long event aimed at raising the profile of men’s health in conjunction with the Prostate Cancer Charity.
The veteran marksman explained “Movember challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache - the rules are simple, start November 1st clean-shaven and then grow a moustache for the entire month. “
The moustache becomes the ribbon for men’s health, the means by which awareness and funds are raised for cancers that affect men. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, by taking park in “Movember”, Glenn will commit to growing a moustache for 30 days.
Glenn has asked all fans of Lisburn Distillery to help support his venture by sponsoring him for as little or as much as possible. “It’s for a really good cause and i hope everyone associated with the club will get behind me to raise money”
So what if the former Linfield star scores against his former club at New Grosvenor on the 27th of November-will he be keeping the ‘tache’ for good luck? “Not a chance!” he replied.
If you can help support Glenn please speak to him at any home or away game, and if you’d like to make a donation to his sponsorship please put it in an envelope with your name and ‘Movember’ on the front and pass it to either Glenn himself, Club Finance Officer Terry Thompson or Secretary Ashley Wragg.
You can find out more information about “Movember” here. (AW)

Although it didn’t perhaps feel like it at certain times, last season was an amazing season at New Grosvenor. There were many dark moments but in the end Tommy and the team did the business on the park to ensure Premiership survival; that will never be forgotten by Whites’ supporters.
To remember it and raise more funds for the club itself, DH has produced a 20 X 16 inch commemorative limited edition poster. It features either every Premiership goal or the goal celebrations, from every win or draw from the side’s first Carling Premiership victory under Tommy Wright on 17th October 2009.
The print will cost £10 and all profit after the deduction of printing costs will go to the club.
You can view a larger digital file of the print by clicking on the image to the left. A copy of the poster should also be available for supporters to view at the next two away matches (Glentoran/Newry) – Colin Hopkins will have this and will take the details of those who wish to purchase.
We hope to have the poster in the club shop for sale or collection from Saturday 13th November (Coleraine game).

Thanks to everyone involved in the organisation of the event and those who provided an excellent buffet supper. The DST also thank White’s for their supply of toasted oats, and also Tempted Cider, for their kind support and contributions on the night.

In yesterday’s post-match media interview, Whites’ manager Tommy Wright was asked about the season so far. He replied; “I am happy with it but I could have been even happier with it in that there games were we dropped too many easy points and maybe a lot of managers could say that but I can only speak on what I have seen and what we have done. At times we just haven’t defended well enough and that has cost us dearly – Glenavon at home last week 2-0 up (for example). Overall we are pleased because this club has come a long way in twelve months and since we went on that great run last year, this is only our fourth defeat in twenty-three games so we are happy enough with how we are progressing but we know we can still do better.” (Report, with thanks, from David Hunter) |

Still early days, but Stuart hopes to be back in action in December.

Congratulations to manager Tommy Wright on his first year in charge at New Grosvenor. It was after the Whites had lost at home to Crusaders on 26th September 2009 that Tommy was unveiled as the club’s new manager and he started in that role on Monday 28th September 2009. His first win came on 17th October against Institute and after the club went on that amazing run of eleven games undefeated from the 06th March 2010 to the end of the season, Premiership survival was guaranteed; history had indeed been written. Today we sit in fifth spot with thirteen more points than we had this time last season - a long season to go of course, but to Tommy and his assistant John Cunningham, “Well done” and keep up the good work.

100907 Tomasz out to Mach mark at New Grosvenor Tomasz Mach is finally clear to play for Lisburn Distillery. Despite the best endeavours of the Irish Football Association (IFA), the football authorities in Poland were unable to furnish clearance within the required time-frame. This has meant that the IFA have been able to issue provisional clearance in accordance with FIFA regulations. Tomasz made a scoring debut in tonight’s Steel and Sons Cup win for the Seconds over Iveagh United. He has been working hard in training and we are delighted that he is now able to commence playing for the Whites.

050810 – National Autistic Society - Lisburn Distillery’s nominated charity for 2010-2011
The National Autistic Society Northern Ireland will be our club charity of the season for 2010/11. It is the only charity permitted to undertake matchday collections at New Grosvenor during the 2010-2010 season and they will be collecting this Saturday when Lisburn Distillery take on Glentoran in the Carling Premiership The National Autistic Society is the UK's leading charity for people affected by autism. In Northern Ireland over 17,000 have autism, if you count their immediate family autism impacts on the lives of over 68,000 people. Despite this autism is still relatively unknown and misunderstood, which means that many of these people do not get the level of help, support and understanding they need.
The National Autistic Society Northern Ireland provides information advice and support, they campaign and lobby for lasting positive change for those affected by autism. Their services include family support, education advice, an outreach service for adults, befriending schemes and social programmes for people with autism. They have 11 branches providing local sources of information and support.
The National Autistic Society Northern Ireland works across Northern Ireland to provide a range of services to children and adults with autism and their families and carers. In order to provide these services they are reliant on our fundraising activities and the generosity of the Northern Ireland public – we hope to support them at New Grosvenor this season.
