160212 Comedy Night – John McBlain

A date for your diary - Saturday 10th March 2012 – when there will be a comedy night organised by the Distillery Supporters Trust in the Lisburn Distillery Social Club featuring well known local comedian John McBlain.

As ‘Spittin’ John McBlain himself says; “Loved by the audience, Hated by politicians”. On the night you can rest assured  that there will be more than a few politicians on the stage at the club as John draws on his many ‘political friends’ and others to provide a good night’s craic.

His impressions range  from people such as Chris Eubank, Gerry Adams, David Trimble, Mo Mowlem and the Rev William McCrea to, and of course most famously, the Rev Ian Paisley. He has been doing impressions since the age of 15, and is now one of Northern Ireland’s most sought after comedians.

Tickets are priced at £10 each which includes a light buffet supper and a late disco afterwards. The event begins at 8.00 pm

Tickets are available on matchdays at the club  (Saturday 18th February (v Dungannon Swifts) and Saturday 04 March (Seconds v Carrick Rangers Seconds)) at the club shop or the social club bar.

This will prove a popular event and tickets will be in demand so we suggest you book early to avoid disappointment.

Our thanks to the DST and Selby Addis in particular for all his hard work behind the scenes.

PLEASE NOTE: JOHN MCBLAIN'S SHOW IS FOR ADULTS ONLY – IT DOES CONTAIN STRONG LANGUAGE AND ADULT HUMOUR.

120212 Robbo gets NI U21 post

Congratulations to Lisburn Distillery assistant manager Stephen Robinson (pictured left) on his appointment as the Northern Ireland U21 manager

He will manage the team for the remainder of the UEFA Euro 2013 qualifiers, his first game coming up shortly on 29th February 2012 (away to Macedonia)

“I am extremely honoured to be given this position with the Under-21s.  With so many good young players coming through our ranks here in Northern Ireland it is an exciting time to be involved in the set-up.  I know from my time with the Under-19s the calibre of players we have and it is an advantage, of course, that I have already worked with some of the current Under-21 players in my previous role, so I know what they are capable of,” said Stephen.

Northern Ireland manager, Michael O’Neill added:  “Stephen is an exciting young coach with plenty of ambition and drive to succeed.  He has tremendous experience as a player and I have absolutely no doubt that he will use that experience and become a first class coach and manager.  I feel he has the knowledge of the young players in this country and for me, he was an obvious choice to be the Under-21 manager.”

Lisburn Distillery boss John Cunningham also commenting, added; “It is a good opportunity for Stephen, it is a full time job and no better man to get it . He has been good for us and he is trying to do the right things.”

Stephen has named Tommy Johnson as his assistant and Marlon Beresford as his goalkeeping coach.

Everyone at Lisburn Distillery wishes him well in the new role.

We would ask all supporters to arrive as early as they can before kick-off to give themselves time to purchase a ticket and then make their way into the ground. Having the correct change will also help avoid delays.

We apologise for the short notice of these arrangements.

090212 – Tommy Wright in NI set-up

Congratulations to former Lisburn Distillery boss Tommy Wright who was yesterday announced as the new Northern Ireland goalkeeping coach.

Tommy, now assistant manager at St Johnstone. will formally take up his position next week as part of new Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill’s backroom team.

“Having represented my country as a player I am immensely proud to become the Goalkeeping Coach of the Northern Ireland senior squad,” said Tommy. “Everyone knows that I’m very passionate about Northern Ireland and I am thrilled to be working alongside Michael O’Neill again.  He is a fantastic young manager and I am sure he can inspire the players ahead of the World Cup Qualifiers in September.”

100212 Bugsy’s thoughts on Derry City game

It’s back into Setanta Sports Cup action for the Whites this weekend and the opposition, Derry City, is no stranger to Lisburn Distillery boss John Cunningham.

As well as playing for the Candystripes, Bugsy was also involved in managing the reserves at Derry City and assisting and managing the first team alongside then Derry boss Kevin Mahon.

So what are his thoughts on Saturday’s tie?

“It will be a good occasion for us: Derry City is a fantastic club and it has fantastic players” said Bugsy. “They are a big club that has a very talented group of players and they are training quite hard at the moment.

There should also be a carnival atmosphere as they will bring a few supporters along and it will be a good experience for our young players and for us as a team to experience the game and that’s what I want them to do. I want them to improve and get better and when you play against the better teams and the better players you see what level your own players are at and you can see what you have to work on

I am expecting a very tough game, but we will enjoy it. It’s a good cup competition and it is good to play against differing types of opposition who play in different ways. That will help us and our younger players in particular. Derry will pass the ball well all over the pitch so we will need to be on our game and we really have to be at ourselves if we are going to give a good account of ourselves in the competition.”  (DH)

050212 – Successful DST Manager’s lunch held

The Distillery Supporters Trust (DST) held its’ first ever Manager’s Lunch yesterday ahead of the Carling Premiership game against Portadown.

And despite a bit of traffic congestion en-route for Whites’ boss John Cunningham, it proved a very successful event with a good turnout in the clubhouse.

John Cunningham and Stephen Robinson talked about the club and where we are as well as fielding questions from the floor. Topics included player profiling, set-up structure and of course the question of staying up – which we are confident about.

Distillery legend Bertie McMinn was the guest speaker after the lunch reflecting on his career and the club during his period in the famous white shirt.

Our thanks to the DST for holding the event and to Denis and Pearl of Showtime Catering for providing the meal.

201111 – Whites in focus

Earlier this month David Hunter made a presentation of seven framed photographs to the club.

“It was always the intention to follow up my 2005 montage of the Whites trip to Lithuania to play Zalgiris Vilnius” he explained. “So I am delighted at long last to give these seven photographs to the club and hopefully people will get an opportunity to see them soon.  They are part of the club’s history as it goes forward. I am also working on three separate picture projects which will hopefully see the light of day before the end of the season – the main one being well over 75 ‘historic’ images since 1993 when I took on the role of the club’s official photographer.”

The pictures are all 20 x 16 inches and are;

· Lisburn Distillery v Rangers XI commemorative pre-season friendly print

· Darren Armour ‘150 goals’ commemorative print

· The Intertoto games and trip to Finland against TPS Turku

· Gary Browne’s celebration in front of fans against Ballymena United (Great Escape season)

· The Great Escape print

· Phil Matthews Testimonial print, and

· The Co-Operative Insurance Cup win in April.

All the prints are on photographic paper which will stand the test of time and David (left) is pictured presenting the most recent print (the cup win) to director Terry Thompson (centre) and chairman Jim Greer (right).

The club thanks David for these historic images and all the work and time involved in creating them.

Lisburn Distillery announced its’ new management line-up last night following the departure of Tommy Wright to Scottish Premier League side St Johnstone.

John Cunningham is the new manager of the club and after his appointment last night he had a broad smile in the boardroom; “It’s great news” said John, “we have been disappointed and shocked this week with Tommy going. He’s moved on to a challenge and opportunity and Glenn and myself see this as an opportunity – it’s definitely a big challenge at the moment, the two of us together along with Willie (McFaul) will turn it around. It’s going to be good and it’s going to be interesting and there may be a few ups and downs along the way but we will work hard for what we have to try and achieve.”

Glenn Ferguson is now assistant manager at the club. It’s been a remarkable few months since the legendary Irish League goal-scorer called time on his playing career back in May but it’s a step in the direction he wants to go and he is relishing the role.

“I am delighted” said Spike, “it’s my first real step into any kind of managerial position and I will be supporting John as much as I can from now until the end of the season and hopefully beyond that. It will be a steep learning curve – it’s in at the deep end with Tommy gone, results haven’t been good but hopefully we will be able to turn things around and avoid that dreaded relegation battle and the finger-nail biting at the end of the season and hopefully we will enjoy it and get a good run at the pre-season for next year.”

Former Northern Ireland international goalkeeper and former Newcastle United boss Willie McFaul completes the new team, remaining as chief scout.

All the appointments are until the end of the season when further talks will take place.

“I am absolutely delighted that John and Glenn have decided to come together and take on this challenge” said Lisburn Distillery chairman Jim Greer last night. “It will be a big challenge for them, eight games now without a win and it’s probably a good time for them to come in and hopefully the only way is up. I wish the two of them all the best and they have the full support from the board.”

Everyone connected with the club will wish all three well in their new roles, they are keen to take the club forward, are already familiar with it, its’ playing staff and financial position and are committed to the cause.

The Whites will now prepare for next Saturday’s Carling Premiership game against Dungannon Swifts.

031111 Tommy Wright leaves Whites for Scotland

The headline news today is that we are sadly saying goodbye to Lisburn Distillery manager Tommy Wright.

Following the appointment of Steve Lomas as manager of Scottish Premier League side St Johnstone, Tommy will join up with his former Northern Ireland international colleague at The Saints on Friday as assistant manager.

The club agreed to release Tommy from his contract and the formalities were completed last night between the board and Tommy.

Lisburn Distillery chairman Jim Greer said; “Whilst we are very disappointed to lose Tommy we are equally delighted that this opportunity has come along for him. He has done a fantastic job in difficult circumstances at this club and clearly there is no way that we were going to deny him from taking up this tremendous opportunity.

We genuinely thank him for all the work he has put in here at the club and our achievements, we all wish him success at St Johnstone."

In a farewell message to Lisburn Distillery and its’ supporters Tommy said; "First of all I have got to thank the board for allowing me to go and join Steve Lomas and from my point of view it is very pleasing that they wouldn’t stand in my way. The club gave me an opportunity in management again and I will always be grateful for that ; the fact that I have been able to do a good job at the club obviously enables me to move on to a higher level and that has not been achieved without the support of the players, the staff, the board, the people behind the scenes who rarely get mentioned but who have kept the club afloat in the difficult times and the supporters who all rallied round together and put this club on the map again.

No matter where my career takes me, I will always have a soft spot for Lisburn Distillery and what we achieved. It is quite remarkable what we achieved, everyone of us; the board, players, supporters, everybody over the last two odd years. I don’t think we ever got the recognition (that we deserved) in the wider circles, the media, but it has been a remarkable achievement and it will live long in my memory."

On behalf of everyone here at the club we thank Tommy for all he has done since September 2009 and the new chapters etched in our history – “The Great Escape 2009-2011” and “League Cup Winners 2011”.

We wish him well at McDiarmid Park and we now begin another new journey here at New Grosvenor.

John Cunningham and Glenn Ferguson will be in charge of the team for the Carling Premiership tie this coming Saturday against Donegal Celtic.

011111 – We will remember them

The Lisburn Whites Supporters Club have now announced plans for the unveiling of a special memorial plaque to commemorate the ultimate sacrifice given by five men connected with the club during the first World War.

On Saturday 12th November 2011, before the game against Dungannon Swifts, members of the supporters club will gather at the club with specially invited guests, including members of the Lisburn branch of the Royal British Legion and Lisburn City councillors Alderman Paul Porter and Councillor Thomas Beckett along with Directors and supporters of Lisburn Distillery Football Club to unveil a plaque to five soldiers with connections to the club who gave their lives during the Great War.

The five players were as follows:

- Private William Brolly of the 1st Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers died at Gallipoli, Turkey on 21/08/1915

- Private Samuel Long of the South African Infantry was killed in action in Germany, East Africa on 20/06/1916

- Private David Drennan of the 8th/9th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles was killed in action in Flanders, Belgium on 01/09/1916

Terry Thompson, speaking on behalf of the Lisburn Whites Supporters Club, said, "The unveiling of this plaque is our way to remember these five brave men who gave their lives during the first World War. The plaque will take pride of place in the Memorabilia Exhibition in the club shop.”

051011 Grosvenor Whites 65 not out

Congratulations to the Grosvenor Whites Supporters Club who are celebrating their 65th anniversary this year.

One of the oldest supporters club in Ireland, they were formed in 1946 not far from Grosvenor Park in McCloskey’s bar in Devonshire Street. At that time, the playing era of Billy Smyth and Eddie Lonsdale, there were several supporters’ clubs in Belfast – the Ormeau Whites, and the Shankill Whites – but today only the Grosvenor Whites remains from that trio.

Over the years they have done much for this club, a mainstay during the nomadic years of the 1970s and the re-generation years of the 1980s they continue to be whitely-focussed on Lisburn Distillery. They have manned turnstiles, purchased a pre-fabricated building to act as a boardroom and base during those difficult times after leaving Grosvenor Park and much more besides.

They purchased some £8000 worth of shares in the early eighties to help solve a drainage problem with the new surface at our then new home here.

In recent years too they have continued to provide both financial and practical assistance; sponsoring Academy teams, providing bench coats for the playing staff, sponsoring games and they still continue to run and bear the costs of a supporters bus to away games as well as presenting the highly regarded and coveted Grosvenor Whites Player of the Year award.

Many of the club members have been ardent Whites’ supporters for decades and they enjoyed the formal celebration last Saturday to mark a fantastic achievement. There were letters of congratulations from Coventry City and manager Andy Thorn, the Preston North End Former Players Association, and former Belfast Whiteman Billy Bell presented an engraved gift on behalf of the Bell/Waters family to mark the happy occasion.

Well done, happy anniversary and a big THANK YOU to the Grosvenor Whites for all they have contributed to the club.

021011 - Injury update

Encouraging news on the injury front as manager Tommy Wright gave an update after yesterday’s game. He said; “Scott Davidson played in the reserves today and during the week after his hand injury, Andy Hunter will probably be back to full training in a week’s time and Gary Thompson is likely to be out for two weeks after injuring his ankle in training.

The injury position is improving but I think overall the quad has done extremely well up to this stage but we need to keep improving and get up the table as high as we can.”

021011 - Sammy Stewart signs for Whites

Lisburn Distillery boss Tommy Wright confirmed that former Glenavon midfielder Sammy Stewart (pictured below) has joined the Whites.

He said, “Sammy has signed to the end of the season, it may be that he goes to Australia in January so we are delighted to get him on board. He is a good young player we are pleased to get him and he will give good competition for places.”

The twenty year old started out with Glenavon before signing for Aberdeen in 2008, returning to Mourneview Park last season. We welcome him to New Grosvenor.
